Why Start a Garden?

  • Shorten Your "Food Miles"

On average, your food travels 1,500 miles to get to your dinner table.

That’s a lot of “food miles.” We’re here to change that by bringing your food just about as close as it can be: straight from your yard.

  • Build a Healthier Life

There are so many health benefits to gardening and growing your own food.

Our gardens offer more than just veggies on your table: they give you a new hobby outside, an opportunity to move, and replace chemically-treated food with organic. Gardening has even been shown to reduce stress and boost your immune system.

  • Cook Better, Healthier Meals

No need to debate it- fresher is better.

Growing your own organic fruits and vegetables provides nutritionally-dense, delicious food straight to your dinner table.

  • Create a Beautiful (and Abundant) Landscape

We’re not only here to help you grow food- we want to make it beautiful, too.

All of our gardens are designed and hand-crafted to fit seamlessly into your existing landscape and create a space that’s both stunning and productive.

FAQs

  • A foodscape is a landscape that produces food. Similar design principles can be used in foodscapes as in landscapes, like color, texture, size, and accounting for existing landscape elements and structures.

When we say the word “foodscape” we specifically mean raised bed kitchen gardens (gardens in boxes, elevated from the ground that grow food), and perennial in-ground gardens (gardens not in raised beds in which the crops grow back year after year, like raspberries or grapes).

  • We design, install, and maintain kitchen gardens (elevated raised bed gardens) and edible landscapes (in-ground, perennial gardens). We also teach people about how to grow food and maintain their edible gardens through one-on-one Garden Coaching and group classes & workshops.

  • Our training and expertise is specific to vegetable gardens, so we generally decline requests to maintain non-food gardens. However, we often include flowers in our designs and are happy to work with existing ornamental landscaping to ensure compatibility.

  • We offer over 80 varieties of fruits and vegetables, carefully selected for size, color, ease-of-growing, and other factors (you can check out the list of our most popular fruits, vegetables, and herbs in our Columbus Foodscapes Planting Calendar).

In larger gardens, we often plant perennial crops that come back year after year like strawberries or asparagus. Our gardens often include a combination of edible flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruits.

  • The cost of new garden installations range very widely depending on factors like size, square footage, plant selection, material selection, level of installation, and more.

We are happy to work within your budget to help you reach your goal.

  • Of course! Most of our clients enjoy at our maintenance services at least quarterly, and we also offer one-on-one garden coaching to help you learn about how to grow food in your garden. Many of our clients are brand-new gardeners. You’d be surprised how much you can learn in your time with us!

  • We serve all of Franklin County including Columbus and the surrounding suburbs and neighborhoods (Dublin, Worthington, Hillard, Gahanna, Bexley, New Albany, Grove City, etc). For areas outside of our service area, we charge a modest transportation fee for consultations and services.

  • Yes! Flowers add beauty and provide wonderful function for your garden by attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. We love to include edible flowers to plantings (they add a gorgeous pop on salads) and cut flowers for bouquets.

  • You can grow food even on the teeniest patio, as long as there’s enough sun! Generally, the smallest garden we’ve installed is around 15 square feet; we also can help with patio and potted gardens, which tend to be much smaller than raised bed gardens.

  • Absolutely! If you have a vegetable garden already that just needs a little help troubleshooting and TLC, we can get you started with a new garden consultation. If you’re wanting additional support beyond that initial meeting, we can put together a custom proposal for organic garden miantenance, garden coaching packages, and more to help you transform your space into a magical (and delicious!) oasis!
